Classical Kindergarten

Classical Kindergarten at Good Shepherd School consists of phonics, handwriting and math. In addition, science and history are integrated through classical literature, Five in a Row and nature study.

With the following activities and resources, students learn to observe, discover and explore.

  • Five in a Row classical literature

  • Phonograms

  • The Good and the Beautiful (Language Arts)

  • Heggerty-Phonemic Awareness

  • Orton-Gillingham Plus Core Foundational Literacy Skills Curriculum

  • Pentime Manuscript, Book 1, by Pentime Publishers

  • Horizons Math

  • Poetry memorization

  • Nature study and science experiments

  • Art: watercolors, acrylics, tracing and pieces from nature

  • Independent creative work time

Copy work allows the child to learn rules of grammar, punctuation and spelling. Narration encourages children to narrate a sentence for the teacher to write down. The children then copy the written words correctly and neatly.
